Spring is a beautiful time of the year when nature comes alive after a long, wet, and cold winter. Seeing the trees bloom and flowers flower is one of the best times of year in the Lower Mainland. It’s also the perfect season to prepare your home for the warmer months ahead.
Taking the time to prepare your home for spring not only enhances its curb appeal but also ensures that it remains in top condition throughout the season. By doing this in the spring you can sit back and enjoy the warmer months however you please…like camping out on a lawn chair with a bevy in hand…or, whatever floats your boat.
In this article, we will discuss some essential tips on how to prepare your home for spring and why it’s important.
Clean Your Roof, Gutters, and Windows
Winter weather can take a toll on your roof, gutters, and windows. Inspect your roof for any signs of damage, such as loose or missing shingles, leaks, or cracks. Clear your gutters of debris, such as leaves and twigs, to ensure proper drainage and prevent water damage. If you notice any issues, it’s important to address them promptly to prevent further damage and costly repairs. No one wants to be reminded of the rainy winter we just had, clean your windows inside and out to let light IN! While doing so, have a look for any deterioration of caulking around your windows or other signs of water ingress.
Service Your HVAC System
As the weather warms up, you’ll likely start using your air conditioning system (if you’re lucky enough to have one) more frequently. Before you do, it’s important to have your HVAC system serviced by a professional. A well maintained HVAC system not only operates more efficiently but also helps improve indoor air quality. Clean or replace air filters, check and clean air ducts, and have the system inspected for any potential issues. This will ensure that your home remains comfortable and energy-efficient throughout the spring and summer months.
Drain and Flush Your Hot Water Tank
It’s always a good idea to flush out your hot water tank and remove any sediment or debris that has built up over the winter. Also, if you would like to extend the life of your HWT, we recommend checking and replacing your anode rod (they typically should be replaced every 3-5 years).
Inspect and Clean Your Exterior
Need a paint job? Winter weather can take a toll. Inspect your home’s exterior for any signs of damage, such as cracks in the siding, peeling paint, or damaged trim. Repair or replace any damaged areas to prevent further deterioration. Clean the exterior of your home by power washing the siding, decks, and driveways to remove dirt, grime, and mold. Paint areas that need repainting. Paint is there to protect your siding and trim. Keeping your home looking prim and proper not only enhances the curb appeal of your home but also protects it from potential damage caused by harsh weather conditions. Take care of your investment!
Check Your Irrigation System
If you have one, it’s that time to fire it up again. Inspect each zone and ensure none of your heads have been damaged over the winter. Adjust the settings on your irrigation timer as needed to ensure that your lawn and garden receive the appropriate amount of water. This will help promote healthy growth and prevent water waste. (Not that anything really needs any water right now…)
Preparing your home for spring is not only about enhancing its aesthetic appeal but also about ensuring its functionality and longevity. Taking the time to clean, declutter, inspect, and maintain your home can help prevent potential issues and costly repairs in the future.
