Job description

Well, hello there! Thanks for taking the time to consider our job posting. Should you choose to reach out, you should expect to hear back from us within 1 business day.

Are YOU:

  • caring
  • at the top of your carpentry game
  • love carpentry and take pride in the work you do
  • drool (not too much though) over the tool section in the flyers from KMS/Home Depot/Rona
  • a good person
  • might be tired of working for your disorganized boss, or
  • might be self employed and hustling for the next job and doing all that paperwork is driving you crazy, or
  • might just be looking for a change or a bump in pay
  • looking to be an employee (we are not considering subcontractors at this time)

OK, well that’s not all, but if that grabbed your attention then…

We are Sprucehill Custom Homes and Renovations, an award winning custom home builder and renovator requiring an experienced and organized carpenter to join our team. The vast majority of our work takes place on the North Shore (Deep Cove to Lions Bay). But we also take on work in Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, and Maple Ridge from time to time with plans to expand into the Fraser Valley by 2024.

Your professional attitude towards customer service, your teammates and your uncompromising workmanship is not optional (read more below about our team etc.)

We are specifically looking for someone with a proven track record that can, with minimal direction, successfully coordinate themselves in completing the following types of tasks:

  • High Proficiency:
    • interior finishing (hang doors, install trims…)
    • drywall install/repairs (not entire houses, but maybe a room?)
    • Painting
    • deficiency list resolution (ie. punchlist)
  • Some Experience:
    • minor framing
    • demo (surgical, tidy, clean)
  • Nice, but not necessary:
    • concrete forming
    • exterior finishing (rainscreen, window trims, soffit, Hardie siding, sidewall shingles), ideally…

Basically, if it can be done to a house or apartment, you will likely have already done it in your career so far.
Around here, the bar on workmanship is that it must be able to be reviewed by another contractor/carpenter with the only acceptable sentiment being, “Wow, they did a good job.”

The successful candidate must have:

  • a minimum of 4 years of experience on single family residential job sites
  • excellent problem solving skills
  • a hunger to learn and better themselves
  • most, if not all, of their own tools
  • their own reliable transportation
  • the ability to follow instruction
  • ability to fit into a team atmosphere
  • be available and happy to work 8 hours / day 7:00 to 5:00 M-F (site/client dependent)
  • Red Seal is a bonus, not requisite

In return for your experience, knowledge, hard work, and tools we’re offering:

  • $32 to $40 per hour + 8% vacation/stat holiday pay
  • health benefits (single or family coverage options)
  • $0.40/km mileage allowance when using your vehicle for work related business
    • fuel price offset allowance – when prices are above $1.90/L, we help you with your fuel costs getting to and from work
  • Partial or full FUNDING for industry related continuing education and training, if that’s something that is of interest to you – we want to support your growth
  • Lots of room for advancement!

A little more about us… One of our team has been here for 9 years, two have been with us for 7 years, others are nearing 5 years. In a transient industry, we feel like this is great testimony towards who we are and what we do. If you are going to fit in, you’re going to need to have a good sense of humour and you are going to have to TRULY CARE about what you do.

Sprucehill was formed in 2006, but the boss didn’t really start putting the hammer down (metaphorically) until January of 2009. He actually put the hammer down in 2011 as the business began to grow and more time was needed to sell and coordinate jobs.

We meet once a week via Zoom to check in with each other as a group to discuss projects and any support required. We meet once a month for beers to unwind (company funded). We do our best to encourage a family like team environment, at Sprucehill you’re not just a number you become part of the family. We experiment with different ideas, this year we’re taking a company wide and company supplemented (including trade partners & families) camping trip to Whistler (not manditory), we are also planning our second annual local summer BBQ. Team is a big deal around here.

We recently won a Georgie Award as well as a HAVAN Award for Housing Excellence and have been nominated for over 22 different awards over the past 5 years.
